Bar study: Letterpress

The line is pressed into the paper. A shader builds a relief from the letters and lights it with two lights: a sun that follows your local time, and the pointer as a raking light. Move the pointer close to the words.

A WebGL2 relief lit by the time of day and the pointer

  • WhyMaterial without imitation. At rest there is only a faint shadow in the edges, as on good print, and it changes over the day.
  • RiskThe text is drawn in a canvas. The real text lies on top of it, transparent, so focus, selection and screen readers work. Without WebGL2 the plain bar shows.
  • On a phoneThe sun works on a phone too, and the raking light follows the finger while it is down.
