Two ways to break a paragraph
A browser fills each line with as many words as fit and moves on: first fit. Knuth and Plass look at the whole paragraph at once and choose the breaks that keep the spaces most even, with hyphens where they help. Galley sets the same text both ways, at the same width, justified. The bar beside each line shows how far its spaces stretch or shrink.
