Zibaldone writing (P23)
Zibaldone writing is the editor from Zibaldone, the writing app at zibaldone.page, as a document two people can write in at the same time. The sample is a brief for a printed catalog, with a checklist, a callout and a table.
Writing
The editor is Zibaldone's own: its ProseMirror schema, its markdown shortcuts and its keyboard. Type # and a space for a heading, a hyphen for a list, [] for a checklist and > for a quote. Type / to open the block menu, which lists the blocks in four sections and narrows the list as you type, so /tab offers a table. Every block gets an id, which versions and exports use to find it again.
Proof
Proof reads the text 600 ms after you stop typing. It marks a sentence of more than 40 words, the same word twice within 90 characters, two spaces in a row, a space at the end of a paragraph and an empty heading. The notes are listed in the side panel by rule. Select a note to jump to the words, or dismiss it, and a dismissed note stays dismissed while the text around it changes.
Two people
Each update and each cursor is encrypted with AES-GCM in the browser before it is sent. The key is 32 random bytes in the link, after the #, and a browser never sends that part of a link to a server. The relay stores and forwards the encrypted updates, so it cannot read the text. An edit made without a connection is stored on the device and sent when the connection is back.
History
A version is a Yjs snapshot stored inside the document, so it is encrypted too. A version is saved after a pause in the writing, at most once every 20 seconds, and you can save one yourself. Select a version to see what changed since then, word by word: added words are underlined and removed words are struck through. A restore adds the old text as a new edit, so every later version stays in the history.
Export
Export writes the document as a PDF, an EPUB 3 file or a DOCX file in your browser, with Zibaldone's manuscript writers. The headings become chapters, and you can add a title page and a table of contents. The PDF is set in Source Serif 4, with JetBrains Mono for code, and embeds only the letters the document uses. Tables are not yet included in the word comparison in History.
